Super Bowl Gatorade shower: What to know before you place this popular prop bet

Bettors beware: Guessing the color of Gatorade poured over the winning coach's head in Super Bowl 58 isn't as simple as it sounds.

It remains one of the most popular bets to place, as avid fans and casual Super Bowl viewers alike put a couple of dollars down every year on what color the end-of-game Gatorade shower will be. While picking a popular hue sounds easy enough, those who played along last season were thrown for a loop when purple — a Gatorade color that had only appeared in two previous Super Bowls dating back to 2001 — rained down on Andy Reid's noggin as the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII.

What are the odds an unexpected color will spill in the final seconds of Super Bowl LVIII? Here is some background from BetMGM that will help you decide how to place your Gatorade prop bet.

BetMGM tells us that in a span between 2001 and 2023, orange Gatorade has appeared in the most Super Bowls, dousing the winning coach five times during that span. It's no wonder BetMGM's John Ewing reported via social media this week that bets on an orange Gatorade shower, priced at +500, are one of the top prop bets being placed at the sportsbook.

However, blue Gatorade has appeared the most frequently, being poured over the winning coach's head in three of the last five Super Bowls and four times over the last nine Super Bowls. This is likely why BetMGM has blue Gatorade listed at more favorable odds at +275.

Additionally, red or pink Gatorade hasn't been used in the Super Bowl Gatorade shower ever since the turn of the millennium. Yet the colors are listed together at the same odds as regularly-occurring orange at +500 odds.

And don't forget about the ever-elusive clear Gatorade. While listed at +1000 odds, clear Gatorade made an appearance in four consecutive Super Bowls from 2005 to 2008.

Think you have a handle on which color will be featured in this year's Gatorade shower? The odds could shift in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, but you don't want to wait too long to place your bet. Then you can kick back on Feb. 11 — well, until the end of the fourth quarter when that cooler of Gatorade gets dumped on someone's head.
