Steelers Get Powerful Answer From Titans’ Ryan Tannehill On Helping Pittsburgh’s Playoff Chances
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a pivotal moment in their quest for a playoff berth. With the Week 18 regular season finale against the Baltimore Ravens looming, the team finds itself in a somewhat stressful scenario. While there are multiple paths to the playoffs, the simplest route involves a victory over the Ravens on Saturday.

However, the Steelers also need a bit of assistance from other teams. Specifically, they could use a win from either the Tennessee Titans or the Miami Dolphins to bolster their chances. The Dolphins are set to face the Buffalo Bills, while the Titans are gearing up for a showdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While there are alternative scenarios, the formula for the Steelers seems straightforward: a Steelers win and a victory from either the Titans or the Dolphins.

The situation has not only put the Steelers in a tense position, but has also sparked intriguing responses from other teams, including the Titans. When Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel was asked about the team's motivation to win the upcoming game, considering that a loss might help their draft position, his response was candid and passionate.

A Titans media member Gentry Estes asked Vrabel a question about losing or winning and how it helps going into the offseason. Vrabel made it clear that losing is not an option he's willing to consider.

"It s**ks to lose, Gentry. Did you have another though, or... I'm just curious. It fu**ing s**ks. Losing. Awful. That's why I want to win. You don't sleep. You wanna win for the players that bust their tail. It's not about, 'Hey, we'll go into the offseason on a good note.'"

Vrabel's colorful response underscores the competitive spirit that runs deep in the NFL, where winning remains the ultimate goal, regardless of the circumstances.

The Titans, like the Steelers, have had their share of quarterback drama this season. Ryan Tannehill began the season as the starter, but found himself benched when Will Levis took over the reins and breathed a new air raid attack into the Titans' offense. Now, with Levis dealing with an injury, Tannehill has a chance to make a significant impact on the Steelers' playoff chances.

Tannehill's future in Tennessee is uncertain, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and the Titans seem committed to developing Levis as their future quarterback. This looming uncertainty adds a layer of intrigue to Tannehill's mindset heading into the regular season finale against the Jaguars. In an article from Pro Football Talk, Josh Alper touched on Tannehill’s current mindset.

“Tannehill said that he isn’t going to 'fully sit and reflect on the last five years at this time' because it wouldn’t be fair to teammates to be less than fully engaged in preparing to play, but he did say that he knows how he’d like to end his time in Tennessee.”

Steelers Playoff Hopes Have Life

For Steeler Nation, the prospect of a motivated and fired up Tannehill delivering an offensive masterclass against the Jaguars is an exciting one. While it may not be the most likely outcome, the NFL is known for its unpredictability, and anything can happen on any given Sunday.

Tannehill spoke with members of the media on Wednesday to discuss how important a victory on Sunday would mean to him.

"I spent five years of my life here in this organization. A lot of great people. I would love to be able to leave it on a win."

The Steelers' offense has shown promise in recent weeks, particularly the connection between Mason Rudolph and George Pickens. If the defense can return to full strength and maintain its form, this Steelers team could be a formidable contender in the postseason. In the NFL, where surprises are commonplace, the Steelers' journey towards a potential Super Bowl run is one that isn't likely, but not out of the realm of possibilities.
