Bill Belichick reportedly 'interested' in coaching three NFC teams

It was reported shortly after Bill Belichick failed to land the Atlanta Falcons' head-coaching job this past winter that "the expectation now within the league is Belichick is coaching somewhere" during the 2025 season.

Belichick seemingly has a few clubs in mind depending on all that occurs between now and next winter.

Don Van Natta Jr., Seth Wickersham and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN revealed in a lengthy article published on Wednesday that Belichick "is believed to be biding his time until next January for openings on teams he has told confidants he would be interested in coaching." Those clubs are the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

A January story said that there was "a belief in some league circles that both" the Cowboys and Eagles "expressed interest in Belichick, that Belichick didn’t reciprocate, and that those teams then decided to stick with their current coaches."

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones kept Mike McCarthy as his head coach following the club's wild-card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, but McCarthy is on track to be out of contract after the 2024 season and holds a 1-3 postseason record with Dallas.

It's believed Giants head coach Brian Daboll could be on the hot seat after his team finished the 2023 season with a record of 6-11. Belichick famously earned his first two career Super Bowl rings serving as an assistant and later as defensive coordinator with the Giants from 1979 through the 1990 season. It's thought that team co-owner John Mara could reach out to Belichick at any point if Big Blue endures yet another losing campaign this coming fall.

As for the Eagles, they retained head coach Nick Sirianni even after the 2023 squad suffered a brutal collapse that included going from 10-1 to 11-6 before a wild-card postseason loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Whispers in January indicated Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie could be interested in Belichick, and the ESPN story noted that Roseman and Lurie are both "fans" of the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach who turned 72 years old on Tuesday.

"Roseman told ESPN he had a conversation with Belichick, a check-in to see how the coach was doing after he was [shown the door by the New England Patriots in January]," ESPN reported. "A source close to Belichick confirmed there was no talk during the call about working for the Eagles. Still, there was chatter in league circles that Philadelphia and Belichick could be a match. Despite some owners and executives believing the game had passed Belichick by, the Eagles felt he still had his fastball."

Belichick is 15 wins away from setting an NFL record for career victories earned by a head coach (regular season and postseason combined).

Thus, he is expected to pursue coaching opportunities ahead of the next NFL year, which will open in March 2025. His presence now will hover over three NFC East clubs between the middle of April and at least the start of the 2024 campaign.
